Beginning
AJ grew up in a family marked by instability and unpredictability, which contributed to her seeking love, security, and validation outside the home. She left home and lived with a friend who later entered a relationship and became pregnant. After giving birth, the friend and her partner left the shared house, leaving their baby in AJ’s care.
At the same time, AJ was involved in a relationship with a man while his family provided some support in caring for the baby. AJ remained in the relationship even though she did not feel right. However, the relationship was emotionally and physically unsupportive, and AJ faced increasing financial strain as she struggled to cover daily living expenses for herself and the child. At a very young age of 15, AJ was offered a job by her older friend. Without choices, AJ began engaging in commercial sexual service as a means of earning income and meeting needs.
AAT’s operations team identified indicators of child sexual exploitation through online data collection and noticed the possibility of a minor aged under 18 being exploited for prostitution. AAT staff decided to conduct an undercover operation, posing as a customer at a hotel, which led to AJ’s identification. AJ was subsequently rescued and provided with protection, rehabilitation, and recovery support later on. In terms of legal support, AJ received government protection and her legal proceeding was under the officials’ care.
Middle
During the protection period at a government shelter under MSDHS (Ministry of Social Development and Human Security), AAT provided therapeutic rehabilitation activities focusing on career planning, education pathways, and reproductive health education. In terms of legal support, AJ received government protection and her legal proceeding was under the officials’ care. However, our legal practitioner support AJ for victim compensation and had advocated for her justice through the convening of a compensation meeting.
Despite our continued efforts to follow up on the case proceedings and provide advocacy support through coordination with relevant government entities, no cooperation was received from government officials. As a result, navigating the bureaucratic system to advocate for her rights and entitlements proved challenging.
After few months, AJ returned to her hometown, AAT sent our staff to conduct the follow-up visits and it is revealed that she had moved out of her family home, as her family was unable to provide adequate care. She began living with her boyfriend again, relied on him financially, and was exposed to risks related to substance use. In addition, she again reported experiencing physical abuse by her partner, with visible injuries observed. Staff provided counseling focused on empowerment, self-care, self-belief, and building confidence in her own abilities. The staff also reiterated the patterns of healthy relationships and “love bombing,” behaviors focusing on recognizing warning signs and harms associated in unhealthy relationships.
Support included identifying her vocational interests and encouraging her to seek employment to regain financial independence. Subsequently, it was learned that AJ ended the relationship after experiencing further violence. Despite her serious concern about finance, she decided to choose herself while starting to find employment on her own. At the time, our staff supported AJ emotionally and continued to assist her in instilling her hope, self-belief, and building confidence in her own abilities and we were able to identify her vocational interests and encourage her to seek employment to regain financial independence.
An end
In the latest visit AAT had with AJ, she was very determined to work and she requested AAT to support on job document preparation and we helped her on those requests, aiming for her to progress in her desired career. AJ revealed to us that she had started a relationship with a new partner, who works at an ice factory. They live well and get along well together, and there have been no reports of any physical and emotional abuse from AJ. This time, AJ looks very energetic, happy, and hopeful for her future. A few weeks after meeting AJ, our staff received great news from her that she landed in a sales position at the most well-known processed food retailer of the province. She has started working continuously for a period of three months now.
This is the story of a young woman who came to understand her own worth and what she truly deserves. Beneath her struggles, AJ carried a quiet strength, waiting for belief—both from others and from herself—to awaken it. Through reflection and courage, AJ recognized the kind of relationships she deserved and found the strength to step away from what was harming her.
Her determination and self-awareness offer an important lesson: loss does not always require tears, as new beginnings can emerge when we allow ourselves another chance.
