A Story of Transformation đź’«

Orn’s story is a powerful reminder of how lasting support can change lives. Once a 15-year-old trafficking victim, she is now a small business owner and dedicated volunteer with AAT, using her journey to inspire and protect others. Read more about her transformation inside this newsletter.

Dear readers, partners, and supporters of AAT

From May to August 2025, our team at Alliance Anti Trafic (AAT) has worked with dedication to protect and support women and children vulnerable to sexual exploitation and violence. This period has been especially meaningful as we were able to help a significant number of girls and women safely return home, while also continuing our advocacy efforts to strengthen long-term protection systems.

In this edition, we share key highlights, statistics, and stories that reflect both the challenges and progress of our work. Your ongoing support makes this impact possible, and together, we are creating safer futures for women and children across Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar.

🛡️ Protection:  AAT protects 30 girls and Women from Sexual Exploitation and Human Trafficking

Between May and August 2025, AAT protected a total of 30 girls and women from Thai, Lao, and Burmese nationals. These include: We protected 5 girls from sexual exploitation in Thailand. Also, we protected 22 Lao and 3 Burmese women and girls from sexual exploitation and forced marriage.

⚖️ Legal Assistance: AAT is committed to supporting victims through the legal process.

Our legal support plays a crucial role in securing justice for victims of sexual exploitation and human trafficking. Between May and August 2025, AAT provided legal assistance in numerous cases spanning from 2017 to the present. During this period, our team worked tirelessly to see cases through to final resolution—ensuring that victims received justice, offenders faced appropriate penalties, and compensation was pursued whenever possible.

As a result of these efforts, six victims were awarded a total of 143,000 Thai baht (approx. USD 4,004) in compensation: five victims received 93,000 Thai baht (approx. USD 2,604) from defendants, while one victim received 50,000 Thai baht (approx. USD 1,400) from the Ministry of Justice of Thailand.

Despite this progress, major challenges remain: some cases can take up to six years, and when defendants have no assets, victims may receive no compensation even after a favorable judgment. In other cases, compensation is delayed for years, or victims may decide not to pursue it at all. Nevertheless, AAT remains steadfast in advocating for victims and working closely with government agencies to ensure they obtain the justice and restitution they rightfully deserve.

Advocacy Spotlight: Victoria’s Secret Case

In early 2018, officials from Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and other agencies raided the “Victoria’s Secret” massage parlor in Bangkok, Thailand. The raid found 113 women and girls of Thai, Lao, and Myanmar nationalities. Among them, 15 victims were identified as victims of human trafficking and subsequently protected by the government.

In 2019, AAT and the network organizations submitted a letter to several government agencies, including the Judicial Commission. The letter called for an investigation into the judge who oversaw the case, alleging that the ruling exceeded the scope of the original claim by issuing a judgment against individuals who were not parties in the lawsuit. As a result of this judgment, three perpetrators were not prosecuted.

Most recently, on 19 May 2025, the Judicial Commission ruled that the judge responsible for the case be dismissed from service, as reported in the media.

🌱 Rehabilitation and Empowerment: AAT supported 132 girls and women to reintegrate into society with full potential.

From May to August, AAT supported 132 beneficiaries in the three countries with counseling, emotional healing, family visits, empowerment activities, and access to education or job training, tailored to each individual and country context.

đź’« #HerStory: A Three-Year Transformation: From Victim to Entrepreneur and Advocate

At just 15, Orn (a pseudonym) was forced to leave school due to family struggles and was lured into prostitution. In 2022, AAT rescued her and provided a safe environment where she joined empowerment activities, learned how to protect herself and her peers, and began to see a future beyond exploitation.

The following year, with her parents’ support, Orn joined AAT’s volunteer program after returning home to Northeast Thailand. She became a trainer assistant, educating students about online dangers in local schools, and even supported projects for vulnerable and stateless children.

In 2025, she took another bold step by starting her own small business selling baked goods and clothing, thanks to skills and equipment provided by AAT. At the same time, she remains an active volunteer of AAT, helping reconnect at-risk youth with support. Orn’s journey from victim to entrepreneur and advocate is a powerful reminder of how consistent care can turn suffering into hope

📚 Prevention: AAT protects against sexual exploitation and human trafficking through proactive training.

The nature of sexual exploitation and human trafficking is constantly evolving, requiring proactive measures to keep communities safe. To address this, AAT equips girls and women with the knowledge and skills they need to protect themselves and their loved ones through targeted training activities. From May to August 2025, AAT directly reached 335 individuals across Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. These trainings covered key topics such as cybersecurity awareness, online and offline sexual exploitation, sexual health & reproductive health, emerging forms of human trafficking, reporting mechanisms, and practical strategies for self-protection.
